Amsterdam, the capital of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is famous for its historic homes,
laid out in a pattern of concentric segments in the shape of a fan and built on piles driven through an upper layer of mud into the firm, sandy bottom up to 18 meters below. Consisting of some 6,750 buildings dating from the 16th to 18th centuries are crowded into an area of 2,000 acres, dissected by 160 canals (grachten), that are home to numerous houseboats. Many picturesque bridges link the city's 90 islands, eight of them old wooden bascule bridges, including the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge).
When visiting Amsterdam, sights such as the Anne Frank House, the Red Light District and the historic city centre with its many canals are undoubtedly on the list. The canal boats, Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum are also very popular. To discover more about Amsterdam look a little further than the well-known attractions. In the Oud-West district, trendy cafes and boutiques can be found. Where in the industrial North, visit the flea markets and vintage furniture stores. In fact, every neighbourhood outside the city centre has something special to offer.

Take a flight above Dutch history and discover the locations where the Dutch caused a lot of commotion during the 400-year Golden Age! When Amsterdam and Rotterdam were still small villages in the Middle Ages, the Hanseatic cities in the east of the Netherlands had already developed into powerful trading centres. About 200 Hanseatic cities worked together within a European Union for four hundred years. Most of the trade went by water with the first cargo ships from the Middle Ages. From Lelystad we fly along a number of the historic Hanseatic cities such as Elburg, Kampen, Zwolle, Hasselt, Harderwijk and Hattem.
