In the picturesque village of Volendam, which has been isolated for centuries, old traditions have been preserved for a long time.
The Volendam traditional costume is still worn by a few women and eel is still fished in the IJsselmeer. The historic village is located by Lake Markermeer, and once had direct access to the North Sea via the Zuider Zee. Because of the good location by the water, many fishermen settled in the village. Volendam does not stand out for any particular landmark, instead what draws thousands of visitors to this small town every year is the town’s pretty architecture and well looked after streets. A trip to Volendam is not complete without trying a smoked eel sandwich!
