The Johan Cruijff ArenA (formerly Amsterdam ArenA) was uniquely designed by the architect Rob Schuurman.
The stadium looks like a flying saucer. The stairwells are diagonally interconnected, like the shoelaces in soccer boots and the roof can be closed in bad weather. The Johan Cruijff ArenA is the soccer stadium of Ajax, Amsterdam's famous soccer club. The stadium was opened in 1996 and is the largest stadium in Holland with over 54,000 seats. To honour Johan Cruijff, the world-famous soccer player from Amsterdam, the stadium was officially renamed the Johan Cruijff ArenA in 2018. In addition to great soccer matches, the stadium has also hosted concerts by countless celebrities, including Michael Jackson, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Pavarotti, and others. The wedding party for King Willem-Alexander and Máxima was also held at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
