The Oostvaardersplassen were reclaimed in 1968, but this wet ground turned out to be unused for a long time.
Nature saw its chance, creating a nature reserve full of swamps, reed beds and willow forests. The reed swamp becomes a safe shelter and breeding area for many different species of birds. And has even become a rest stop for migratory birds between the far north and Africa. In addition to many species of birds, the Oostvaardersplassen is also home to groups of foxes and large grazers such as wild horses and a large herd of elk.
