Zwolle

Zwolle

Little is yet known about the origins of Zwolle.

Well, in the Middle Ages (around 500 to about 1500) Zwolle was created as the settlement "Suol" on a sand ridge between the IJssel and the Overijsselse Vecht. Situated on the river Aa, this was a perfectly habitable spot that was higher than the otherwise swampy landscape. The name "Suol" was later changed to Zwolle. A stroll through the city brings one back to the Middle Ages. Walk through the Sassenpoort, a city gate built as part of the city defence works. Visit the Peperbus, a late Gothic tower belonging to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption or discover the Celepoortje, one of the oldest gates in the Netherlands.
