Harderwijk

Harderwijk

Harderwijk was founded in the 10th century and has been a centre of commerce and trade ever since.

The city is located in the province of Gelderland and is the capital of the municipality of Harderwijk. Harderwijk has a population of about 45,500. In the middle of this city, the original city wall has been incorporated into the historic street image where many old buildings have been partially restored into unique buildings that split between historic and modern appearances. The Veluwe is an area of protected nature reserve, just outside the city and throughout the city. Throughout this city are several lifesize metal sculptures from a crocodile, lion, gorilla and other animals from local artist Patrick Visser.

Take a flight above Dutch history and discover the locations where the Dutch caused a lot of commotion during the 400-year Golden Age! When Amsterdam and Rotterdam were still small villages in the Middle Ages, the Hanseatic cities in the east of the Netherlands had already developed into powerful trading centres. About 200 Hanseatic cities worked together within a European Union for four hundred years. Most of the trade went by water with the first cargo ships from the Middle Ages. From Lelystad we fly along a number of the historic Hanseatic cities such as Elburg, Kampen, Zwolle, Hasselt, Harderwijk and Hattem.
