Fez is a large city located in the northern part of the country.
This city is also the capital of the Fes-Meknes administrative region and the second-largest city in Morocco. The city was founded in the 8th century under the Idrisid rule and has since grown to hold about 1.1 million inhabitants in the present day. The city has an Arab character and a reputation for mercantile activity and religious scholarships.
There are two parts to the city. The oldest part, Fez el-Bali, where the Qarawiyyin University and Zwaiya of Moulay Idris the second can be found. And the Newer city, Fez Did, was built on higher grounds on the west side of the old city during the 13th century. The beautiful Medina of Fez became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981.
