Liebig Range

The Liebig Range rises on the eastern side of the Tasman Valley inside Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, a high alpine ridge country opposite the main Aoraki massif. From the valley floor the range is a distant wall. From a helicopter on an alpine pad you stand in that high country with views toward Aoraki / Mount Cook and back down the Tasman Valley. On the Aoraki / Mount Cook hub, Brass Peak or Liebig Dome are the weather-dependent alpine landing sites named on the short helicopter — never a landing on Aoraki’s summit and not a deep-snow guarantee.

The Aoraki / Mount Cook Tasman 25-Minute Helicopter Tour is the flight that may put you there. About 25 minutes shared in an AS350 Squirrel, from NZ$379 per person. After the Tasman Valley and Tasman Terminal Lake, the helicopter lands on Brass Peak or Liebig Dome when conditions allow for roughly about 10–15 minutes on the snow when a landing happens, then returns to Mount Cook Airport. Snow on the alpine pad is available much of the year but not all of it; expect the possibility of a rocky pad rather than soft powder.

Glacier landings on the Tasman Glacier sit on different tickets. The Aoraki / Mount Cook Glacier 45-Minute Ski Plane and Helicopter Tour (about 45 minutes, from NZ$599 per person) combines ski plane and helicopter with a glacier landing and aircraft change when conditions allow. The Aoraki / Mount Cook Glacier Highlights 45-Minute Ski Plane Tour (about 45 minutes, from NZ$699 per person) is ski-plane only onto the Tasman. Choose the short helicopter when an alpine pad toward the Liebig country matters more than standing on the Tasman ice tongue.

Alpine landings remain weather- and surface-dependent every day. Routes fly past and beside Aoraki rather than across its tip. These three shared Mount Cook Airport flights do not land on Hooker or Mueller ice and do not depart Fox, Franz Josef, Queenstown or Milford. Shared flights need a minimum number of passengers to operate — often 4; the ski-plane and helicopter combo needs 8.

Meet at Mount Cook Airport on State Highway 80, about a five-minute drive before Aoraki / Mount Cook Village. Free car parking is available at the airport. There is no hotel pickup — make your own way. The same airport is used for check-in, takeoff and return. The exact flight time is confirmed after booking. Check-in typically closes 30 minutes before departure. Wear a warm jacket and shoes suitable for standing on snow; bring sunglasses and a camera. Drones and selfie sticks are not allowed. Children of all ages are welcome and must fly with an adult. Infants may sit on a caregiver’s lap; a seat is still allocated and charged. Individual passenger weight is generally limited to about 116 kg for aircraft balance; guests may be weighed at check-in.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund. Mountain weather changes quickly. Flights and snow or glacier landings depend on visibility and surface conditions. If a flight cannot operate, you can usually reschedule or claim a refund under the free-cancellation and weather policy on your booking. Check availability for dates and start times on the year-round calendar. For an alpine landing toward the Liebig Range when conditions allow, book the Tasman 25-minute helicopter tour on the Aoraki / Mount Cook hub. For glacier landings instead, see Tasman Glacier. Live prices are shown when you book.
