Tasman Lake

Tasman Terminal Lake sits at the foot of the Tasman Glacier, a blue meltwater lake often dotted with icebergs calved from the ice. From the shore tracks you see a slice of water and ice. From a helicopter or ski plane the whole lake opens at once against the braided Tasman Valley and the peaks beyond, including views toward Aoraki / Mount Cook as you fly past. On the Aoraki / Mount Cook hub it is a named sight on the short helicopter and on the combo route — reached from Mount Cook Airport–area flights.

The Aoraki / Mount Cook Tasman 25-Minute Helicopter Tour puts the lake on its path early. About 25 minutes in a shared AS350 Squirrel, from NZ$379 per person: depart Mount Cook Airport, follow the Tasman Valley and braided rivers, overfly the iceberg-dotted terminal lake, then continue to an alpine landing on Brass Peak or Liebig Dome when conditions allow before returning. The lake is a sight from above on a moving route, not a water landing or a boat stop.

The Aoraki / Mount Cook Glacier 45-Minute Ski Plane and Helicopter Tour also overflies the lake on the way to or from a Tasman Glacier landing when conditions allow — about 45 minutes, ski plane one way and helicopter the other, from NZ$599 per person. The Aoraki / Mount Cook Glacier Highlights 45-Minute Ski Plane Tour focuses on the glacier landing in a Pilatus Porter ski plane (about 45 minutes, from NZ$699 per person) and still frames the peak and ice country that feed the lake. None of these tickets land on the lake itself.

Treat the terminal lake as context for the glacier and the peak rather than a timed hover. Iceberg cover and colour change with season and melt. Alpine and glacier landings elsewhere on the same tickets remain weather- and surface-dependent. Flights do not land on Aoraki’s summit and do not stop at Hooker or Mueller lakes.

Meet at Mount Cook Airport on State Highway 80, about a five-minute drive before Aoraki / Mount Cook Village. Free car parking is available at the airport. There is no hotel pickup — make your own way. The same airport is used for check-in, takeoff and return. The exact flight time is confirmed after booking. Check-in typically closes 30 minutes before departure. Wear a warm jacket and shoes suitable for standing on snow; bring sunglasses and a camera. Drones and selfie sticks are not allowed. Children of all ages are welcome and must fly with an adult. Infants may sit on a caregiver’s lap; a seat is still allocated and charged. Individual passenger weight is generally limited to about 116 kg for aircraft balance; guests may be weighed at check-in.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund. Mountain weather changes quickly. Flights and snow or glacier landings depend on visibility and surface conditions. If a flight cannot operate, you can usually reschedule or claim a refund under the free-cancellation and weather policy on your booking. Flights appear on the live calendar year-round. To overfly the Tasman Terminal Lake on a short shared helicopter with an alpine landing when conditions allow, book the Tasman 25-minute helicopter tour on the Aoraki / Mount Cook hub. For time on the glacier that feeds the lake, see Tasman Glacier. Live prices are shown when you book.
