See Lake Wakatipu from the air — a long glacial trough of dark water, a folded shoreline, and Queenstown on a bay with the Remarkables standing off it. The lake runs toward Glenorchy as one sheet you cannot read from the streets: the Frankton arm, the folded coves, and the mountains standing off the water in a single look. Winter puts snow on the wall; summer is rock and dark water.

The extra minutes on the Grand Circle are the difference between a first look at the water and a circuit that also takes in the Shotover canyons and Coronet Peak. On the 50-minute flight the lake is the road out, not the whole product — ice and a snow landing further west are what that ticket is for.
From this same basin the Grand Circle is the flight that names Shotover and Coronet. The short alpine-landing tour is built around the mountain stop, not a full lake circuit. If you want the park west of the water, that is the Southern Glacier, not another loop of the bay.
