The Southern Alps and its forested foothills are home to this glacier
Sir William Fox, Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1869 to 1872, was the name given to both the glacier as well as the nearby village. Similarly to Franz Josef, the glacier descends from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest at just 300 metres above sea level. The glacier starts high in the Alps and then stretches 2600 meters down. Fed by 30 meters of snowfall each year that compacts into the blue ice.
Stunning views of the glacier can be seen on Cook Flat Road near Lake Matheson. Adventures such as ice-hiking and scenic flights can be arranged. Glowworm caves are located just outside the town center, which has many cafes and restaurants to enjoy after one of our scenic flights. Fox Glacier is close to Lake Matheson, one of New Zealand's most photographed lakes. Mount Cook can be seen reflected in it on a clear day.
