The lighthouse of Vlieland makes a beautiful red appearance on the island landscape.
In clear weather, the view from the top of the tower is at least 40 to 50 kilometres, granting a view of several other islands. The lighthouse is open to tourists since 1990 and the lights are still on, this lighthouse serves as a backup beacon in case the radar system breaks down. This small lighthouse is 16.8 meters high and the smallest in the country, but due to its location on top of the highest dune on the island (42 meters high), the tower with its 49 steps is still 54 meters above sea level. The tower was designed by the same designer as the tower on Ameland and was built around 1877.
