The battle against water is nowhere in the Netherlands more visible than in the province of Zeeland.
The Delta Works are the largest defence system in the Netherlands, built to protect the country against high water from the North Sea. It consists of 5 storm surge barriers, 6 dams and 6 locks. After the flood disaster of 1953, Rijkswaterstaat built the Delta Works to shorten the coastline by means of storm surge barriers and dams. This had never been done before in the world, but leave it to the Dutch to tame the sea and make land where there was never before land. Besides the fact that the delta works offer protection to the low countries, they also contribute to the water management and freshwater supply of the country, and the construction of these waterworks has put the Netherlands on the map as a leading engineer in waterworks.
