See the Juneau Icefield from the air — ice and rock at a scale you cannot read from Franklin Street, icefalls, the forest giving way to white. From the docks Juneau is a harbour under a wall of green. From the helicopter the icefield is the country the glacier comes from, a 15-minute flight each way on these tickets, not a scenic loop of the whole field.
Both Juneau flights cross it on the way to Herbert Glacier. The shared landing and the private landing use the same air: Tongass, then Herbert, then back. You do not fly a separate icefield-only product. You do not land on the icefield at large; you land on Herbert, where the ice is open enough to walk.
You do not hike the icefield from the road. There is no road. The Forest Service permit is for the landing, not a traverse. The pilot chooses the pad from the features of the day — still Herbert, still a walk, not a promise of one named moulin.
The extra of private is not more icefield. It is your ship and your clock on the same ice. The extra over a town walk is that you leave the harbour at all. Queenstown’s alpine landing is a mountain pad, not this field of ice.
Glacier landing is the stop. Tongass National Forest is the forest you cross. Crevasses open once you are down. There is no shorter icefield-only helicopter on this location.
About 25–30 minutes of flightseeing in all, 20–25 minutes on the glacier, 2.5 hours with the van. Cruise pickup is from the Goldbelt Tram building — you do not ride the tram. Weather on the icefield is the usual reason a slot moves. The private ticket flies this same field with your own ship.
