See Herbert Glacier from the air — a tongue of the Juneau Icefield, blue ice, icefalls, rock walls in Tongass National Forest. From town you do not walk here. From the helicopter you fly about 15 minutes each way, land on the ice, and the pilot shuts down and walks you around for 20–25 minutes. This is the glacier both Juneau tickets are built around.
The shared Helicopter Glacier Landing and the private glacier landing (up to six) both go to Herbert. About 55 minutes in the air and on the ice; about 2.5 hours with transport. You fly Tongass forest, land on Herbert, walk moulins and crevasses with the pilot as guide, fly home. The private ticket is your own helicopter and your own landing; the shared ticket can put more than one ship on the ice together. You do not dogsled. That is a different product.
You do not land on Mendenhall. You do not stay in the cabin on the ice unless you use the ADA lift. Boots that go over your shoes are at the hangar. The glacier runs 5–10 degrees cooler than town.
The extra of the private ticket is the cabin and the pad, not a different glacier. Stay on the shared landing if you want Herbert at the per-person price. Take private if the group is yours and you want the helicopter to yourselves. Another landing on this site is the alpine landing in Queenstown — rock and snow, not this icefield.
The Juneau Icefield is the ice you fly to get here. The glacier landing is the walk. Tongass National Forest is the country under the skids. Crevasses are what you look at once the blades stop.
Shared flights seat six standard passengers per ship; groups larger than six split and meet on the ice. No lap children — every passenger, including infants, needs a full seat.
