Ellis Island was the most popular place for immigrants to arrive in the United States from 1892 to 1954.
Almost 12 million immigrants worldwide made their way to Ellis Island for the chance of freedom and opportunity. Ellis Island can only be accessed by ferry, but flying over will offer a private view of the historic Ellis Island Hospital and Museum. The island was expanded in size from just over 4 acres large to nearly 28 acres by process of land reclamation. Imagine flying by, and it looks different each time? Don’t have to worry about that; the expansion ended in 1934. Today, the federally owned Ellis Island is C-shaped with two masses of equal land on either side and a ferry in the middle separating them. It’s a phenomenon from the sky because it looks too perfect to be an island.
