Gamla Stan, the Old Town, is one of the largest and best preserved medieval city centers in Europe.
Established in the 13th century, the area abounds in medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture, showing a great deal of North Germanic influence. Stortorget, the main square, is the centre of Gamla Stan. It is close to the main attractions on the island: the Baroque-style Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet), The Riksdag (Parliament) Building and the Grand Church (Storkyrkan), where Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden married Daniel Westling in June 2010. Gamla Stan is fun at any time of the day. In the morning you drink coffee at one of the many coffee shops, in the afternoon you stroll through the narrow alleys and cobbled streets and in the evenings you settle down in one of the many restaurants.
