The fourth largest lake in the country
Lake Wanaka is the fourth largest lake in the country. In the lake is an unusual island called Mou Waho. The town of Wanaka is unspoiled, and not overcrowded, and visitors are not expected to do anything but enjoy the peace and quiet. Very different from nearby Queenstown. Most visitors come here to swim, fish, boat and hike.
Numerous hikes are available in the area around Lake Wanaka, ranging from one hour to four days. Among them is a tough hike to the top of Mount Roy (1578m). The length of this climb is 8 km long and it only goes up. This hike starts 6 km from Wanaka on Mt Aspiring Road.
