Neeltje Jans is part of the Oosterscheldekering and has been used as a work island after the delta barrier had been completed.
There is an information park and an amusement park built on the island where an exhibition about the Delta Works and their history can be visited. The island is about 285 hectares and owes its name to a ship carrying the same name that ran aground on the sandbar. On the island, a single remaining pillar can be found which was built extra around 1980, in case one of the other pillars turned out to be faulty. This 66th pier, however, has never been used and still stands lonely in its dock where it now houses a climbing centre.
