The city of Marrakesh dates back to the 11th century when it was founded by Yūsuf ibn Tāshufīn,
a member of the Almoravids dynasty. Better known as ‘the pearl of the south’ the city has a beautiful mosque with a 77-meter-tall minaret that was built in the 12th century. The Medina, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, is the vibrant heart of the city, together with the Jamaa el-Fna marketplace. Which stands out because of the red clay buildings and ramparts.
Marrakesh is located in the Haouz plain, an area irrigated by the Tannist River to the north. The city is also popular for its many beautiful parks like the 405-hectare Agdal Gardens and the Menera olive grove.
