Where a former Formula One circuit made way for the largest sports complex of Brazil.
The Parque Olímpico is a cluster of nine sports complexes which is located in Barra da Tijuca. Originally made up of three complexes this venue was used for the 2007 Pan American Games. And later on, expanded to 9 complexes that would serve as the venue for the 2016 summer Olympics and Paralympics.
Ever since the 2016 Olympics, these 9 complexes are left abandoned and off-limits for tourists.
Before the first three complexes were built the site was occupied by the Autódromo International Nelson Piquet, which is a former Formula One circuit that hosted the Brazilian Grand Prix in the 80s.
