The Jardim Botânico, also known as the botanical gardens of Rio, are a sight to behold and belong to a very wealthy residential area of the city. The neighbourhood located in the southern region of Rio de Janeiro and got its name as it grew around the actual botanical gardens of the city. Characterised by large detached houses from the upper-middle and upper-class civilians and low proximity to a favela, which is rare in he city. Because of its luxurious character this neighbourhood is also home to many Brazilian celebrities. Another nickname of the region is ‘Suvari di Cristo” which translates to “the armpit of Christ” because it is located under the right armpit of the Christ the Redeemer statue that towers over the city.
