Come face to face with the largest Christ statue in the world
The statue of Christ the Redeemer is a well-known sight to behold. The 38-meter-high statue of Jesus Christ sits atop the 710-meter-high Corcovado mountain and oversees the city surrounding it. In 1850 a Catholic priest Pedro Maria Boss came up with the idea for the statue, only to be shot down by Queen Isabel. In 1921 the Church of Rio de Janeiro resurrected the plan and the statue was designed by engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. The statue was made by Paul Landowski, a French-Polish sculptor and shipped to Brazil in sections, each weighing 16 tonnes. The construction work for the statue took 9 years in total and was finished in 1931.
