A secluded valley filled with mountains, rivers, forests and more. Ready to be explored from above.
Megalong Valley is a beautiful and secluded part of Australia. The valley is located near the town of Katoomba and has some of the most stunning natural features in Australia, including mountains, rivers, forests and more.
The first European to discover the valley was Thomas Jones in 1818, but it took until 1839 for the first settlers to travel to the area. Later on, it was a staging area for an oil shale mine until the reserves were exhausted in 1896. The nearby village Megalong, which was associated with the mine, was left in ruins as people slowly moved away.
Since the historic six-foot track was restored as a hiking trail in 1984, tourism increased. The trail was originally a bridle trail between Katoomba and the Jenolan caves. Earning its name as a bridle track has to be six feet wide to accommodate two to three riders abreast.
