Wadi Rum Hot Air Balloon Ride: Sunrise over the Red Desert

A Wadi Rum hot air balloon ride lifts you off the sand just as the sun comes up over the Wadi Rum desert, and for about an hour you drift over red sandstone cliffs, canyons and dunes as they catch the first light. There is no engine noise and no fixed route: the wind decides where you go each morning.

The Wadi Rum hub has one flight, and it is the one to book: the Wadi Rum Desert Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride, from US$292 per person in a shared balloon, year-round.

What the Wadi Rum balloon morning is like

You are picked up from your camp in Wadi Rum, or from the Wadi Rum Visitor Center, up to 90 minutes before the flight. A 4×4 drives you into the desert to the launch site the pilot has chosen for that morning’s wind. While the crew inflates the balloon you have tea, coffee, water and biscuits, then a safety briefing in English.

Once up, you spend about an hour in the air, more or less depending on the wind and where the pilot can land. Because the wind sets the course, no particular rock formation is promised, but sandstone mountains, canyons, rock arches and red sand are what the desert gives you in every direction. After landing you are driven back to your pickup point; allow about 3.5 hours in total. Photos and videos are sold after the flight.
