Sunrise Over the Jbilets: Your Marrakech Hot Air Balloon Flight

A Marrakech hot air balloon flight starts in the dark and lifts off at sunrise on the North Palmeraie side of the city. For about 40 to 60 minutes you drift over the Jbilets hills, the farmland and the small Berber villages below, and on a clear morning the Atlas Mountains line up along the horizon.

All four flights on the Marrakech hub fly with Ciel d’Afrique from the same airfield, and every one ends with breakfast. What changes is who shares your basket and where you eat.

What you see on a Marrakech hot air balloon flight

These flights take the Jbilets and North Palmeraie morning, not the Agafay desert. Below you are low hills, fields and farms, and the douars, the Berber villages scattered across the plain.

When the air is clear, the Atlas Mountains come into view. The operator does not promise them every day, so treat them as a bonus on a good morning rather than the reason to book. Every ticket gets the same window of sky; you are choosing the basket and the breakfast, not a different view.

Shared, VIP compartment or private: the four Marrakech balloon flights

  • Shared Balloon over Atlas Foothills & Berber Villages, from €100 per person. A shared basket, welcome tea at the airfield, then a Berber breakfast in a caidal tent after you land and a flight certificate.
  • Marrakech VIP Compartment Flight + Breakfast, from €390 per person. Still a shared balloon, but your group of 2 to 5 gets its own compartment in the basket. VIP hotel pickup, coffee or tea, then a Berber buffet under a caidal tent and a calligraphy flight certificate. Minimum two people.
  • Private Luxury Flight + Breakfast, from €580 per person. The whole balloon is yours, with your own pilot and a hostess or steward. Drinks and sliced fruit in the air, luxury 4×4 pickup, and the Berber breakfast under a caidal tent after landing. Minimum two people.
  • Private Gourmet Breakfast & Champagne, from €680 per person. A private balloon where breakfast happens in the air, at a sky table with a hostess: Bacha Coffee, Moroccan tea, fresh orange juice and the gourmet breakfast. Luxury 4×4 transfers both ways.

If the view is what you are after, the shared flight gives you the same sky as the others for the lowest price. You pay more for space in the basket, for privacy, and for having breakfast served in the air instead of on the ground.

Before you go

  • Pickup: hotel pickup from most Marrakech hotels and riads is typical, by 4×4 or van, with part of the road on tracks. The driver confirms the time the evening before, typically between about 5:00 and 7:00 depending on the season. If your riad has no vehicle access, you wait at the nearest point a car can reach. An extra transfer fee may apply if you stay outside Marrakech.
  • Driving yourself: the meeting reference is Ciel d’Afrique, P5VW+GR, Bourrous. Confirm your plan when you book.
  • Timing: allow about 4 to 4.5 hours from pickup until you are back at your hotel.
  • Who can fly: not under 4, and children must be with an adult. Not recommended in pregnancy or with back problems, heart or other serious medical conditions, or vertigo. Shared and VIP compartment tickets have a maximum of 120 kg per passenger; on the private flight there is no published cap, but tell them if anyone is over 120 kg. You need to be able to climb in and out of the basket.
  • Weather: balloons fly only at sunrise and only in suitable weather, so book ahead. If weather cancels, you are offered another time or a refund.
  • Cancellation: currently free up to 24 hours before departure. No-shows and late arrivals are charged in full.
