Chianti, Siena or Val d’Orcia: Choosing Your Tuscany Hot Air Balloon Flight

A Tuscany hot air balloon flight gives you about an hour at dawn over the Tuscany you came to see: vineyards, cypress, hill towns and the folds of the Chianti hills, all below an open basket.

There are four places to launch, Chianti, Siena, Lucca and the Val d’Orcia, and each gives you a different stretch of country. The wind sets the track, so think of each one as a region to float over rather than a route with promised landmarks.

Four Tuscany hot air balloon regions from the air

Around San Casciano in Val di Pesa, the Chianti flight floats over hills and vineyards. Florence is not on the promised route.

From a field near Siena you see hills, villages, cypress and vineyards. A pass over Piazza del Campo would be luck, not a promise.

Around Lucca you rise to about 2,000 feet over valleys, rolling hills, vineyards and hilltop places. It is not a guaranteed circuit of the city walls.

The Val d’Orcia flight covers Pienza and Montalcino country: cypress, vineyards and hill towns, wherever the balloon decides to go.

Which Tuscany balloon flight to pick

All five flights on the Tuscany hub are with Balloon Team Italia, last about an hour in the air, and end with a toast, breakfast and a shuttle back to the launch. Four are shared, starting at €269 per person.

A simple rule: choose the region closest to where you are staying. You meet at dawn and the exact field is only confirmed the evening before, so a short drive makes the morning easier.

Before you go

  • Launch field: Balloon Team Italia flies from weather-dependent fields in Chianti (San Casciano in Val di Pesa), Siena, Lucca and the Val d’Orcia. The exact field and time are sent the afternoon before, after 18:00. Don’t drive to a guessed pin.
  • Getting there: hotel pickup can be arranged after booking at extra cost. The shuttle from the landing back to the launch is included.
  • Who can fly: children 0–6 are not permitted. Not suitable over 115 kg (254 lbs). Not for pregnancy, mobility impairment, heart problems or wheelchair users.
  • Weather: balloons fly at dawn and only if the weather is good. If the team cannot fly, you get a full refund or a move to another day as shown when you book.
  • Cancellation: currently free up to 24 hours before departure. No-shows are charged in full.
