An Anchorage helicopter tour can put you on a glacier the same morning you leave town. Fly over the Chugach Mountains and you may see icefields, braided river valleys and the long water of Turnagain Arm and Cook Inlet, with downtown Anchorage in the distance. Book a landing tour and you step out onto the ice of the Knik Glacier with a guide.
The landings are what make these flights special. You do not just look down on the glacier; you walk on it, with time on the ice before you fly back.
The Anchorage hub has four shared helicopter flights live: one short scenic flight with no landing, and three landing tours with one, two or three stops. They leave from three different places, so check which one your flight uses.
Which Anchorage helicopter tour to book
- Anchorage Chugach 30-Minute Helicopter Tour, from USD 459 per person. About 30 minutes over the Chugach Mountains from Girdwood Airport, with Cook Inlet, Turnagain Arm and downtown Anchorage when the route allows. No landing. The lowest price on the hub.
- Knik Glacier 90-Minute Helicopter Landing Tour, from USD 519 per person. About 90 minutes in total: around 40 minutes of flying and around 45 minutes on a guided walk on the Knik Glacier ice, with micro-spikes included. Leaves from the Palmer / Knik area. The cheapest way onto the ice.
- Grand Knik 2-Hour Helicopter Landing Tour, from USD 762 per person. About two hours with three landings when conditions allow: an alpine stop, an ice wall and the Knik Glacier, plus a guided glacier hike. Leaves from Alaska Glacier Lodge on the Knik River. In winter it may land beside the glacier rather than on top.
- Anchorage Glacier 90-Minute Helicopter Landing Tour, from USD 844 per person. About 90 minutes from the Girdwood side with two landings when weather allows, one of them on a glacier with about 25 to 30 minutes on the ice. You may see the Knik Glacier, the Chugach Mountains and Turnagain Arm. The highest price on the hub.
Want the view but not the ice? The 30-minute flight is enough. Want to walk on a glacier for the least money? Take the 90-minute Knik landing. Want the most time out of the helicopter? The Grand Knik gives you three stops. Staying near Girdwood and want two landings without the drive north? Book the Anchorage Glacier tour.
Before you go
- Where: the 30-minute scenic flight leaves from Girdwood Airport, and the Anchorage Glacier tour from nearby on Mt Hood Drive. The 90-minute Knik landing uses a check-in point in the Palmer / Knik area named on your voucher. The Grand Knik meets at Alaska Glacier Lodge on East Knik River Road, about 45 minutes north of Anchorage; plan your own transport, as rideshare may not serve the lodge after the tour.
- Check-in: about 15 minutes before the 30-minute flight; the Knik landing tours often ask for 30 to 45 minutes. Follow the time on your voucher.
- Transport: hotel pickup is not included. Paid transfers may be offered as an add-on when you book.
- Group size: shared flights of up to about 12 travellers on the 30-minute flight and the Grand Knik, and about 10 on the 90-minute Knik landing. No minimum group size is stated.
- Weight: the 30-minute flight lists a maximum of 290 lb (132 kg) per guest, with comfort surcharges often from about 250 lb. The other flights list similar bands of about 250 to 300 lb and possible surcharges, so confirm when you book.
- Children: no single minimum age is published. Child and infant tickets exist, and infants may sit on an adult’s lap.
- Landings: every landing depends on weather and conditions and is never guaranteed. Winter landings may be changed.
- Cancellation: full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. Weather cancellations typically come with a refund or rebooking.
