A Great Barrier Reef scenic flight shows you what no snorkel or boat deck can: reefs and sand cays laid out in coral water, one after another, with the shapes of the reef clear from above. Take a helicopter from Cairns and you can pair that reef with the Wet Tropics rainforest in the same flight; take one from Port Douglas and you look down on Four Mile Beach and the Low Isles.
In the water you see a few metres of reef at a time. From the air you see how it all fits together: islands ringed by reef, cays of pale sand, and the colour of the water shifting as you pass over it. That big picture is why you fly.

Green Island, Arlington Reef and the sand cays
From Cairns, the reef flights head out to Green Island and Arlington Reef, then over Vlasoff and Upolu sand cays. The cays are small strips of sand sitting in the reef, and from above you see them whole against the water around them. You stay in the air the whole time, which is how you see the full outline.
Four Mile Beach, the Low Isles and Batt Reef
From Port Douglas, the flight follows Four Mile Beach and then crosses to the Low Isles: two coral cays with fringing reef and a lighthouse dating from 1878. Batt Reef is on the same flight. It is a different stretch of reef from the Cairns flights, so it is worth considering if you are staying further north.
Rainforest and waterfalls behind Cairns
The longer Cairns flights turn inland after the reef, into the Wet Tropics. You see Stoney Creek Falls, Barron Falls and Barron Gorge from above. The 60-minute flight goes further still — Double Island, Palm Cove and Kuranda, then a 15-minute extension along Lamb Range and Lake Morris. Fly Over The World’s Great Barrier Reef hub lists four shared helicopter flights with Nautilus Aviation — three from Cairns and one from Port Douglas. All four stay in the air; none lands on a sand cay. Window seats are not guaranteed, and the from-prices include the current fuel surcharge.
- Great Barrier Reef 30-Minute Helicopter (Cairns) — from A$487, about 30 minutes, from Cairns Pier Heliport. Green Island, Arlington Reef, Vlasoff and Upolu sand cays. Pick it if the reef itself is all you want and you are staying in Cairns.
- Great Barrier Reef 30-Minute Helicopter (Port Douglas) — from A$487, about 30 minutes, from the Sheraton Grand Mirage on Port Douglas Road. Four Mile Beach, the Low Isles and Batt Reef. Pick it if you are staying in Port Douglas. It is a reef flight only, with no rainforest.
- Great Barrier Reef 45-Minute Reef & Rainforest (Cairns) — from A$676, about 45 minutes, from Cairns Pier Heliport. The inner reef, Green Island and the cays, then Stoney Creek Falls, Barron Falls, Barron Gorge and the Wet Tropics. Pick it if you want reef and rainforest together without committing to a full hour.
- 60-Minute Reef & Rainforest (Cairns) — from A$965, about 60 minutes, from Cairns Pier Heliport. Green Island, Arlington Reef and Upolu, then Double Island, Palm Cove, Barron Gorge, Barron Falls and Kuranda, plus a 15-minute extension along Lamb Range and Lake Morris. Pick it if you want the most complete picture of the region from the air.
In short: the 30-minute flights are about the reef alone — Cairns for Green Island and the cays, Port Douglas for the Low Isles. The 45 and 60 add the rainforest, and the 60 adds the escarpment beyond it.
Getting the most from the flight
Weather can cancel a slot, and shared scenic seats sell, so book ahead and plan the flight early in your stay. Seats are assigned for weight and balance, not chosen, so don’t count on a particular window — just keep your camera ready from take-off. Sunglasses help, since you’ll spend the flight looking down at bright water.

- Cairns: Pier Heliport, 2 Pier Point Road, Cairns City QLD 4870. Check in 45 minutes before; check-in closes 30 minutes before. Bookings of 7 or more passengers may depart Hangar 7, Bush Pilots Avenue, Aeroglen — follow your confirmation.
- Port Douglas: Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Port Douglas Road — lobby shop or the helipad across the highway, as the team advises. Check in 30 minutes before.
- Hotel pickup is not included on these scenic tickets.
- A minimum number of passengers is required; if a flight can’t go, you are offered another option or a refund as shown when you book.
- Children: infants under 3 may fly free on a paying adult’s lap (routinely one infant per flight, with an infant belt). From 3 they need their own paid seat, and children 3–13 fly with an adult.
- Weights: give accurate dressed weights when you book; you are weighed at check-in, and variances over 10% may incur a fee. Over 130 kg, an extra seat at 50% of the ticket price is payable to the operator on the day.
- Cancellation: currently free up to 24 hours before on some tickets and up to 2 days on others. No-shows and missed check-in are charged in full.
