Two “20-minute helicopter tours” in the same city can be different products. One follows the coast. One turns inland. One is shared and doors-closed; one is private and doors-off. Comparing on price per minute alone is how you book the wrong flight and then wonder why the statue was a speck.
Read the route, then the minutes
Minutes are capacity, not content. Ask: which landmarks are on this option, and which are only on a longer one? On our Dubai pages the 12-minute flight is not a cheaper Grand Tour. On Rio, Christ the Redeemer is on every option; Sugarloaf and Maracanã are not. On New York, treat “from the air” as the honest phrase — Liberty and the harbour are the core; some parks and bridges are seen in the distance, not overflown. If a title names a highlight, check that the duration you pick actually includes it.
Shared, private, doors-off
Shared means you fill the aircraft. You may wait, you will be seated for balance, and you pay per seat. Private means you buy the machine for that slot. Doors-off is a third axis: better pictures, more wind, stricter clothing and camera rules, often a longer check-in. None of these is automatically “better.” A closed-door shared flight over the right route will beat a private doors-off over the wrong one.
Where you take off is part of the tour
A pad in the city (Downtown Manhattan, a Dubai coastal helipad, Jacarepaguá, Bromma) is not the same as a long transfer to an out-of-town field. Factor check-in time: 20 minutes in one place, 45–60 in another, longer for doors-off. A cheap flight that burns an hour in a taxi each way is not cheaper. Read the meeting point on the location or tour page before you compare.
What the price is actually for
Look for heliport or security fees, hotel transfers, and whether photographs are included. On OTA bookings, the widget is the live offer — every duration on that product may appear on each tour page. That is the operator’s catalogue, not a mistake. Your job is to pick the option that matches the title you wanted. Cancellation is whatever that widget says, typically 24 hours on GetYourGuide and Viator. Weight rules are the operator’s, not a universal 90 kg. If a site quotes one number for every city, they are guessing.
A simple way to decide
Write down the two or three things you want to see. Pick the shortest flight that honestly includes them. Choose doors-off only if you care about photographs more than comfort. Choose private only if dates, kids, or a group need it. Then book the pad you can actually reach, in a weather window you can move. That beats a longer brochure every time.
