West Maui Mountains

See the West Maui Mountains from the air — steep ridges, deep valleys, rainforest on the wet summits, and on the short flight the west beaches as a curve of sand and reef. From the coast road you get resorts and one valley mouth. From the helicopter the old volcano is a set of walls that run from the summit to the water.

Five of the six Maui flights look at some of this country. The 30-minute Birds Eye View is the west coast: Kahakuloa, Kaanapali, central Maui on the way out and back. It does not cross to Molokai and it does not climb Haleakalā. The 45-minute West Maui and Molokai tour, the doors-off version of that route, and the oceanfront-landing event all go into the mountains, then across the Pailolo Channel to the Molokai sea cliffs. The 60-minute Complete Island takes the mountains after Haleakalā and Hana — Wall of Tears and the west valleys, without that channel crossing.

You do not hike the interior. There is no public road through these valleys. You see them from the helicopter, then either turn for Molokai, land on the north shore, or fly home.

The extra over the Birds Eye View is the interior and, on the west-and-Molokai tickets, the other island. The extra on the Complete Island is East Maui on the same hour. Stay on 30 minutes if the west beaches are enough. Take 45 west if the mountains and Molokai are the point. Take 60 if you want both halves of Maui.

Doors-off is the same west-and-Molokai geography with the doors removed, not a longer circuit. Oceanfront landing is the 75-minute event that puts you on the ground on Maui’s north shore after that west-and-Molokai air time.

Shared cabin, six passengers. Birds Eye, the doors-on west tour, the landing event, and Complete Island are doors on. The doors-off listing is the open-air version of the 45-minute west-and-Molokai route. Weather in the mountains is the usual reason a valley or a wall of falls is skipped.
