Vlasoff Sand Cay is a low white sandbar on the Northern Great Barrier Reef shelf near Cairns \u2014 the kind of cay that shows best when the tide is out and the water is clear. From a boat it can look like a thin beach line. From a scenic helicopter it may flash as a bright comma of sand against reef colour when conditions line up. On the Cairns<\/a> hub Vlasoff is a may-see sight on the thirty-minute reef flight, never a guaranteed stop and never a picnic landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Great Barrier Reef 30-Minute Helicopter Tour<\/a> is the shared route that names Vlasoff among possible low-tide views. About 30 minutes in the air, from A$491 per person: Pier Heliport check-in, then offshore past Green Island<\/a> over the Great Barrier Reef<\/a>, with Fitzroy Island<\/a> and sister cay Upolu<\/a> also possible when tides and weather allow. These flights are scenic overflights only \u2014 there are no cay or island landings on these tickets. Do not book this ticket expecting to stand on the cay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Great Barrier Reef and Rainforest 45-Minute Helicopter Tour<\/a> (about 45 minutes, from A$681 per person) pairs Barron Gorge rainforest with reef and Green Island views. Sand cays can still appear on the reef leg when the tide is right, but the card\u2019s lead rainforest story is Barron Falls and Wet Tropics<\/a> canopy. Choose the shorter reef flight when low-tide cay hunting is your priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honesty first: cay sightings are tide- and weather-dependent. Cloud, wind and water level change what you see. These two Cairns flights do not sell private cay landings, Fantasy sandbar picnics, or any island drop-off. If a cay does not show, the reef shelf and islands remain the scenic core of the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meet at the Cairns Pier Heliport on Pier Point Road by the Esplanade for typical shared flights of up to six passengers. There is no hotel pickup \u2014 make your own way to the Pier. Return to the same place. The exact flight time is confirmed after booking. Plan to check in about 45 minutes before departure. Check-in closes 30 minutes before the flight. Shared scenic helicopter. A minimum number of passengers often applies (often two); typical Pier departures are for up to about six guests on one helicopter. Infants aged 0\u20132 may sit on a caregiver\u2019s lap free of charge. Children aged 3 and over need their own seat at the adult ticket price. Maximum single-seat payload is 130 kg.
