See Lake Wakatipu from the air \u2014 a long glacial trough of dark water, a folded shoreline, and Queenstown on a bay with the Remarkables standing off it. The lake runs toward Glenorchy as one sheet you cannot read from the streets: the Frankton arm, the folded coves, and the mountains standing off the water in a single look. Winter puts snow on the wall; summer is rock and dark water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All three Queenstown<\/a> flights look down on it. The 25-minute Helicopter Tour with Alpine Landing takes the lake as the first panorama after lift-off, then climbs to the alpine landing<\/a>. The 35-minute Grand Circle stays with the basin and gives you time to see the water as a whole before that same kind of mountain stop. The 50-minute Southern Glacier follows the northern shores on the way west into Mount Aspiring National Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You do not land on the lake and you do not board a boat. This is a helicopter view, then a mountain or glacier pad elsewhere on the same outing. The water stays below the skids for the whole circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The extra minutes on the Grand Circle are the difference between a first look at the water and a circuit that also takes in the Shotover<\/a> canyons and Coronet Peak<\/a>. On the 50-minute flight the lake is the road out, not the whole product \u2014 ice and a snow landing further west are what that ticket is for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From this same basin the Grand Circle is the flight that names Shotover and Coronet. The short alpine-landing tour is built around the mountain stop, not a full lake circuit.
