A Great Barrier Reef scenic flight shows you what no snorkel or boat deck can: reefs and sand cays laid out in coral water, one after another, with the shapes of the reef clear from above. Take a helicopter from Cairns and you can pair that reef with the Wet Tropics<\/a> rainforest in the same flight; take one from Port Douglas and you look down on Four Mile Beach and the Low Isles<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the water you see a few metres of reef at a time. From the air you see how it all fits together: islands ringed by reef, cays of pale sand, and the colour of the water shifting as you pass over it. That big picture is why you fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green Island, Arlington Reef and the sand cays<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From Cairns, the reef flights head out to Green Island<\/a> and Arlington Reef, then over Vlasoff and Upolu<\/a> sand cays. The cays are small strips of sand sitting in the reef, and from above you see them whole against the water around them. You stay in the air the whole time, which is how you see the full outline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four Mile Beach, the Low Isles and Batt Reef<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From Port Douglas, the flight follows Four Mile Beach and then crosses to the Low Isles<\/a>: two coral cays with fringing reef and a lighthouse dating from 1878. Batt Reef is on the same flight. It is a different stretch of reef from the Cairns flights, so it is worth considering if you are staying further north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rainforest and waterfalls behind Cairns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The longer Cairns flights turn inland after the reef, into the Wet Tropics<\/a>. You see Stoney Creek Falls, Barron Falls<\/a> and Barron Gorge from above. The 60-minute flight goes further still \u2014 Double Island, Palm Cove and Kuranda, then a 15-minute extension along Lamb Range and Lake Morris.
