See the Shotover River from the air \u2014 a cut through schist north of Queenstown, a canyon you read as a single line. A jet-boat on the water cannot match that panorama. From the helicopter the river is a slot in the basin, with the town and Lake Wakatipu<\/a> still in the same look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 35-minute Grand Circle flies past these canyons on the basin circuit, then lands on a mountain precipice \u2014 the alpine landing<\/a>. The 25-minute Helicopter Tour with Alpine Landing is the pilot’s choice: the Shotover may be on the track that day, and it may not. The 50-minute Southern Glacier leaves the basin for Mount Aspiring National Park<\/a> and does not include this canyon pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not land in the riverbed and you do not change onto a boat. You see the Shotover from the helicopter, then continue to the alpine stop on the Grand Circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extra minutes over the 25-minute flight are how the Grand Circle makes the Shotover a named waypoint instead of a maybe. That is the point of the longer Queenstown<\/a> basin product. Coronet Peak<\/a> sits on that same 35-minute circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stay on the 25-minute tour if you want the landing more than a guaranteed canyon pass. Stay on the 50-minute flight if ice west of the basin is the point \u2014 that ticket does not sell the Shotover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The schist walls are close enough that the river reads as a cut, not as a valley. The Grand Circle is sold on that cut as a named waypoint. The short flight may show it and may not. Do not treat a jet-boat booking as a substitute for this panorama, and do not treat this panorama as a landing in the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
