The Wakatipu Basin falls away behind you. This is not another look at the town lake; it is a different range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only the 50-minute Southern Glacier is built around this landscape. It follows the northern shores of Lake Wakatipu<\/a>, then the Alps, and lands in snow among the peaks. The 25-minute Helicopter Tour with Alpine Landing and the 35-minute Grand Circle stay in the basin \u2014 Shotover<\/a>, Coronet Peak<\/a>, a Queenstown-basin alpine landing<\/a>; they do not go this far west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not walk a park track and you do not fly a fixed route onto a named hut. You see the icefalls from the helicopter, then a snow landing the pilot sets for the day. The pad is not a named glacier on the ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those extra minutes over the Grand Circle are the whole point of this product: glaciers and national-park ice instead of another Queenstown<\/a>-basin precipice. If you want Shotover and Coronet, stay on the 35-minute flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 50-minute ticket is the one that leaves the lake as a road out. Do not book the short alpine-landing tour expecting this park. The snow landing here is not the same pad as the basin alpine stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Icefalls hang on the faces; native forest sits lower; the snow landing is among peaks, not on a Queenstown-basin ridge. The pilot sets that pad for the day. Do not expect a named hut or a fixed glacier. Do not expect Shotover or Coronet on this ticket. The extra minutes are the west, not a longer basin loop. The lake is only the road out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
